Hello! We are NYU students currently casting an open-to-union NYU thesis short film entitled “Hobbes Odyssey,” and are planning on submitting it to film festivals after production. Regarding pay, the roles are compensated by deferred payment, meaning there is no upfront pay, but if the film succeeds in festivals, the first profits will go towards the actors until they are fully compensated. The roles are also compensated by transportation, credit, a private copy of the film, and catering. The shooting will take place from May 2nd-May 6th in the Tri-State area (NY, NJ, CT) and all actors must be based in the Tri-State area (NY, NJ, CT). Callbacks will be held on April 5th and 6th in New York, NY (preferably in-person but virtual option available).
Below is the logline for the film:
Leading up to a funeral, an estranged young man must decide whether or not to embrace his involuntary dance condition.
We are casting for the following roles:
Hobbes (18-24): Lead, masculine-presenting, any ethnicity. A reserved man struggling to fit in because of his uncontrollable dancing. Having been belittled his whole life, Hobbes lacks the confidence needed to be himself.
Tom (40+): Lead, masculine-presenting, any ethnicity. Hobbes’ father. Stern, religious, family oriented. He wants the best for Hobbes, even if that means challenging his son.
Wilbo (18-24): Supporting, masculine-presenting, any ethnicity. A free-spirited and elephant-pant-wearing hippie who approaches conflict with defiance and naivety. His loyalty to Hobbes and high pitched voice are unwavering.
Chaz (18-24): Supporting, masculine-presenting, any ethnicity. The rebellious bad boy, cool mix of angst, who encourages Hobbes to take more risks.
Nicky (18-24): Supporting, masculine-presenting, any ethnicity. The repulsive bully who makes fun of Hobbes’ insatiable dancing despite having little going on for himself.
Don (18-24): Supporting, masculine-presenting, any ethnicity. One of Nicky’s obnoxious frat goons who blindly follows his lead and bullies Hobbes.
Hobbes’ Mother (40+): Supporting, feminine-presenting, any ethnicity. Hobbes’ ominous countenance-wearing mother who passed away when Hobbes was younger. Needs to be comfortable with ‘a dance’ in a bathtub.
Mysterious Woman (60+): Supporting, feminine-presenting, any ethnicity. An intrusive figure whose seemingly innocent questions unintentionally expose cracks in Hobbes' reality, making her an unsettling presence in his unraveling world.
